The 8th, 9th and 10th pairs of ribs are false ribs. The false ribs do not join the sternum directly, but they are connected to the 7th rib by cartilage. False ribs attach through costal cartilage. The upper three false ribs connect to the cartilages of the ibs just above them. The last two false ribs usually have no ventral attachment to anchor them in the front, and they are floating ribs. The false ribs are attached to the lowest true rib that provides connection to the sternum. The bones are slightly shorter than true ribs, and they are connected to the spine in the back, but not connecteddirectly to the sternum in the front.
