Although there is abundant fruit on the island where the group of boys, large and small, find themselves, there is little to assuage their hunger. They suffer from the most dreadful stomach cramps because they are not having anything starchy to fill themselves up.
However, they know from early on that there are pigs on the island and the plan to trap and kill one occupies their minds. The first kill, and therefore the first feast, comes at a dramatic point in the story where Ralph, representing Good and Jack, representing Wild and Unethical are about to clash in their ability to lead the other boys.
