Urinary catheterization is the insertion of a catheter through the urethra into the bladder to expel urine. The following are simple steps that a nurse must follow to insert a straight urinary catheter. Inflate the balloon with a prefilled syringe before inserting the catheter to check for balloon potency.

Suction the fluid back into the syringe after the balloon is clear. Hold the catheter with one hand and fill the balloon when the catheter is in the bladder, and urine has started to drain. Usually, 5ml to 10ml of sterile water is utilized. If the balloon is causing discomfort, apply a slight tension on the catheter after the balloon is inflated to verify its proper alignment in the bladder.

Attach the catheter to the drainage tubing and drainage bag if not already connected. Tape the catheter along the frontal aspect of the thigh for the female patient. Please make sure that there is no pressure on the catheter when it is attached to the patient. Hang up the drainage bag on the frame of the bed below the level of the bladder.

For some patients, there may come a time where the patient will need a catheter. This catheter is helpful in giving the body the medicine it needs. It is done through a cavity and can also be helpful if a person is in surgery.

Another use for the catheter is if a person has issues using the bathroom. A catheter would be used to get the urine from the body. It is important for the nurse to follow the steps need to insert a catheter in the patient.

The first step is to prepare the patient for the procedure, as well as clean the equipment that will be used in the procedure. Then, the nurse will need to create a field that is sterile. He or she needs to have on gloves and then clean the meatus. From there, they can insert the catheter in the patient and have the urine begin to flow.
