Overcoming insomnia is easier said than done. It can be like torture trying to sleep night after night without success. You probably toss and turn, trying to find a comfortable position to lay down, but you can’t.
Instead of providing a source of comfort for you, the covers seem to be too hot, and it feels like they are choking you. It won’t be easy, but if you follow these simple steps, you may be able to overcome insomnia.
• See a doctor.
• Sometimes, depression and anxiety are the culprits, and you may need to take something for it.
• It could also be a likelihood that your insomnia is caused by obstructive sleep apnea.
• Muscular pain can also be keeping you awake.
• It is a common condition in people who snore.
• Go over all of your medications with your doctor.
• There maybe something on the list that is keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep.
• Try cognitive behavioral therapy, and keep a sleep journal, monitoring your sleep cycle with a therapist.
• Do not take naps.
• Stick to a structured sleep and wake cycle.
• Go to bed at a similar time each night and wake up at the same time every morning.
• Try yoga or Pilates, or even just deep breathing before sleep.
• Exercises such as yoga, Pilates, and stretching help you with your breathing and can help bring your tension level down so that you can relax and go to sleep.
• Try taking melatonin.
• Melatonin is a hormone that we lose with age.
• It makes your sleep more useful by resetting your circadian rhythm.
• It has also been demonstrated useful for certain types of anxiety disorders.
• If all else fails, try counting sheep.
• The continuous counting might eventually tire you out, and you will fall fast asleep.
