An oxidation number is a number assigned to an element that exemplifies the number of electrons dropped or acquired by an atom of that element in the compound.

• Free elements have an oxidation number which is zero

• The oxidation number of each atom is calculated by subtracting the sum of lone pairs and the electrons it gains from bonds between atoms of the same element and is divided equally.

• Oxidation numbers tell how electrons move in an oxidation-reduction.

• The number is an indicator of the degree of oxidation or loss of electrons.
