When measuring the floor to put down flat carpet, you must calculate by multiplying the length and the width.
However, when measuring the carpet for stairs, it is not that simple.
• You must take into consideration that the stairs are not flat, as they rise to the next floor.
• When you measure carpet on stairs, you must calculate the rise of one of the steps to be carpeted.
• The top of the step that you position your foot upon is called the tread.
• Use a tape measure to procure the fall of each step.
• The fall is the part of the step that connects the rise of two adjoining steps.
• Add the calculation of the step’s rise and fall together to come to the total length for each step.
• Count the number of steps that are the same size as the step that you measured, multiply your full amount for the length by the total of steps which are precisely the same size.
• Take the dimensions of any steps that are a different size from the first one measured.
• Add the measurements of all the steps.
• This measurement will be the total length of carpeting that is necessary for the stairs.
• To get the width of the steps, measure the broadest step on the staircase.
• Put the tape at one end of the rise and stretch it across to the other end.
• All you require is the size of the widest step.
