There is nothing more exquisite in the insect world than an elegant and colorful butterfly. Drawing butterflies can be a challenge because they have very intricate wings, and it is difficult to capture their essence fully.
However, with these simple steps, you can draw a simple cartoon butterfly. It is easier to start with this since a lifelike butterfly takes more practice.
• Draw a small circle near the center of the page for your butterfly head.
• Sketch two smaller circles overlapping with the top of the head for the eyes.
• Make each circle about half the size of the head.
• Draw one eye on the top left half of the head and the other eye on the top right half.
• Add a smaller circle inside each eye to show the light shining off them.
• Make these circles a quarter of the size of the eyes.
• Draw a circle in the left eye close to the top right of the eye.
• Color in the eyes black except for small circles. Draw two curved lines coming off the top of the head with a curve at each end for the antennae.
• Make a line on the left side of the head, curving out to the left.
• Do the same to the other side.
• Draw a thin line for the antennae.
• Sketch a tall, slim u shape coming down off the head for the body.
• Make a u shape about half the width of the head.
• Draw a B shape on one side and a backward B shape off the left side of the body.
• Add two circles to add more character to the butterfly’s wings.
• Draw it in the upper and lower half of each wing.
