We can assume that welding existed in some form in Iron Age and the Bronze Age. But true welding was invented in 1881. It started with August De Mertens, who practiced arc heat to join lead plates together.

One of his students then patented a method of electric arc welding with carbon rods. After that, welding processes developed very quickly.
