One of the major differences between DSL or Digital Subscriber Line and cable internet is that the former is offered through telephone services, whereas the latter is offered by different cable companies through the coax cables that connect to the TV cable. DSL offers a set of bandwidth within a particular range. For instance, DSL has a speed ranging from 256 to 24,000 kilobits per second.
However, before DSL service can be offered, a regular telephone service is required. Although, cable internet service is similar to DSL in some ways, the cable internet service is offered using cable infrastructures.
Just as you will need a regular telephone service for DSL, you will also need cable service before cable internet can be connected. However, cable internet should be considered if you need a service that offers higher bandwidth, though there can be fluctuations in bandwidth with cable internet, it still offers up to 20 megabits per second.
