Mujahideen and the Taliban stand in the name of Islam. Taliban took its root from Afghanistan. They ruled in Afghanistan from the year 1996 to the year 2001 before they were displaced by the military of the United States of America. Mujahideen groups waged war against the pro-Soviet Afghanistan government around the 1970s, the latter part. Mujahideen groups spread to different nations such as India, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Somali, Iran, etc. In terms of etymology Mujahideen is derived from two words Jihad and Mujahid, which means to struggle and struggler, respectively.
Mujahideen means to exert force or effort against something. Taliban is a word in Pashto, which means students. Both groups have their ideologies deeply rooted in Islam. Taliban has an anti-civilization ideology, while Mujahideen’s ideology is completely based on defending religious faith. Taliban ideology is viewed as the departure from the Islamism of Mujahideens, therefore regarded to have been born out of anger over Mujahideens.
