Hippies come from an exciting and tumultuous generation, and they created their social groups because they did not believe in society's norms and standards. Hippies were anti-war, always stoned, moved from place to place and traveling light, and listened to psychedelic rock 'n roll.
Music such as Jimmy Hendrix, Cream, Janis Joplin, and The Rolling Stones inspired them, and hippies fought for freedom and peace. There is so much symbolism for the hippie movement, such as the peace sign and bell bottoms. Their time was mostly in the 1960s going into the early 1970s.
On the other hand, a hipster follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those that are not the typical mainstream styles, and unlike hippies, hipsters tend to wear straight leg jeans. In British English, trousers cut to fit and fasten at the hips are called hipsters. Hipsters enjoy listening to Indie rock such as Pixies, The Black Keys, The Strokes, and Arcade Fire. They avoid being labeled, as they are against labeling and stereotypes. The word hipster is a slang word that means a young middle- class person who follows unconventional trends and pop culture.
