Pride Month is celebrated in June because the incident that led to the significance of this celebration happened in the month of June. Although, there had been continued efforts by gay activists’ right from 1924, about the need for the government to pass a law that would protect gay rights, the incident that happened in New York City’s Greenwich Village in June 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, catalyzed the gay rights movement in the United States.
On June 28, 1969, the police invaded this place where transgender, bisexuals, lesbians used to hangout and arrested those selling liquors without a license from the relevant agencies. While the police were carrying out their duty, they were resisted by the patrons of the bar, and this led to a big riot, which also lasted for days. The following year i.e., 1970, the members of the LGBTQ community planned and observed the first anniversary of the unfortunate incident that happened on June 28, 1969.
