The term Island can be defined as a contiguous area of land or a piece of land, totally surrounded by water on all sides. In contrast, the term peninsula can be defined as a piece of land that projects into the water from a larger landmass. Most times, peninsulas can be surrounded by water on three different sides, but there must a piece of land that is connected to the mainland on the fourth side before they can be actually referred to as peninsulas.

Although, any area of land that is surrounded by water on all sides is known as an Island, however, a piece of land that is surrounded by a narrow or small water body can't be regarded as an Island. In contrast, any area of land that is surrounded by water on the three sides but gets connected to the mainland even by a thin piece of land on the fourth side will still be regarded as a peninsula.

Unlike Islands that are usually classified to be of two types i.e., oceanic or continental, peninsulas are usually grouped as continental.

There are various types of lands all around the world. These lands are defined by specific characteristics which help differentiate from one another. Two types of lands are islands and peninsulas. They are both surrounded by water, but the number of sides that each have differ. Islands have water on all four sides, while peninsulas only have water on three sides.

Another difference between them is how they are found. Islands come in groups. Examples of these islands include the Hawaiian Islands and Honshu. Peninsulas are always found in single. Examples include the Noto Peninsula and the Kowloon Peninsula in China.

Island is a term used for any location that is all surrounded by water on all sides. Peninsula, on the other hand, simply refers to an area that has water surrounded by it too, but aside from it is connected to the mainland. You can journey to the island by any other means of transportation, but not by land. Meanwhile, you can also journey to the mainland through the land.

However, it takes a big body of water to surround a land for it to be referred to as an island. If it is surrounded by just a river, it is not an island. But when the water body is not even that big, it can still be referred to as a peninsula. There are basically two types of islands, which are an oceanic island and Continental Island.

The continental island is located on the continental shelf, while the oceanic islands are located beyond the continental shelf. When it comes to the peninsula, it can only be continental. In addition, islands can exist in-group, whereas the peninsula mostly stands alone.
