Lipids can be defined as fatty acids and their derivatives, and substances related biosynthetically or functionally to these compounds. Lipids are components found in the living system consisting of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and some also contain nitrogen and phosphorus.
Animals store fat in their adipose tissue, these stored fats constitute a reserve that can be used as a source of energy. Lipids constitute 15 to 20 percent of the body weight in humans.
The functions of lipids include
1. lipids act as activators of enzymes. Examples phosphatidylcholine, micelles for activation of microsomal enzymes
2. Fats stored subcutaneously in warm-blooded animals serve as insulation against the unfavorable environment.
3. It acts as the basic structural component of the cell membrane.
4. Intense biological activity – some have profound biological activity; they include some vitamins and hormones.
