Mold is an impression of something, as it encapsulates the details of the object before the cast is made, and it can be natural or synthetic. The imprint that the object leaves is the mold, which can be filled to make the cast. You can make molds from your hands and feet. Many times, there are art projects in the lower grades in school that allows you to mold something. It creates an impression of any object to be filled with a wide array of materials. Plaster is a popular material that is often used because it is cheaper and produces reliable results. Some other soft materials used include polysulfide, wax, and clay.

A cast is a final step that comes after the mold. In engineering, metal is heated to exceedingly high temperatures until it becomes a liquid. The liquid is poured into a mold of a particular shape and size, and this is how jewelry is fashioned in metalworking. The liquid will be left to settle before the cast is made.

Cast and mold are important aspects of art, for they are useful in creating 3D projects. There are many things that can be made from cast and mold, including jewelry and utensils used in the kitchen. A cast comes after molding. A cast is used to fill the mold. Another difference between them is how they are made. The process of molding is how a mold is made. Casting is used to make a cast. Along with these differences, it should be known that the cast is the final product. With the mold, a person can still make modifications before the cast is done.
