Delirium and dementia are two different mental conditions but they can as well share certain similarities, most especially when you think of the fact there are certain similar symptoms common to the two conditions. Dementia simply refers to a progressive decline in the cognitive function of the brain. This is usually caused when there is a damage or disease in the brain. At times, it can be caused by depression, alcohol abuse, stress, lack of vitamin B12, etc.
Some of the symptoms of dementia are lack of memory, lack of coordination, inability to accurately make decisions, perplexity, etc. On the other hand, delirium is also a mental condition with symptoms such as the inability to concentrate, anxiety, confusion, hallucination, disorientation, etc. Delirium is usually caused by severe infection, drug intoxication, and dehydration. The various symptoms of delirium usually come at the initial stage of the condition, but they can be reversed. As for dementia, this condition is incurable and cannot be reversed.
