For people who have always liked gemstones, it will not be too hard to distinguish the difference between quartz and topaz. One of the main differences is how hard they are. Quartz will have a hardness of 7 while topaz will have a hardness of 8. This means that if you would try to scratch topaz with quartz, it is quartz that will become scratched.
Some people may get confused with them because of how their refractive indices are but if you would check closely or you would check out their gravities, that is the time when you will notice how different they are. You can try to toss them and you will immediately know which is which.
