Meristem is a type of tissue that is located in the area of plant growth. The meristem contains undifferentiated cells. There are two main types of meristematic tissue, namely the primary meristem(apical meristem ) and secondary meristem( lateral meristem).
Apical meristem is found on the growing buds and growing roots. Apical meristem is responsible for the increase in length and height of the plant by causing growth in the stem and roots of the plants. Apical meristem differentiates into three kinds of meristem, which include pro derm, procambium, and ground.
Lateral meristem surrounds the apical meristem, therefore causing growth to occur laterally. It helps to increase the diameter and width of a plant. Lateral meristem differentiates into two types of tissues, namely vascular and cock cambiums. Lastly, it is responsible for the radical growth of the plant, and also it initiates growth when apical meristem ceases to initiate growth.
