One of the main differences between an internship and an externship is the amount of time that a person would need to spend to complete the period. An internship is normally long. It would be for a whole summer. Some people would need to take an internship for about a year.

The externship is normally going to be very short. Some would only need to take it for a day. The longest externship can be about two weeks. There are some people who only need to take extrenships because they believe that this is something that they may need. Some would do it over spring break and that would already be enough for them.
