Mixtapes and albums are two types of musical compilations. A mixtape is a normally shorter form, and it is used to promote a person's music or upcoming project. An album is longer and is normally an official project. Another difference is how they are promoted. Mixtapes do not have as much promotion. If it is promoted, it would be just promoted by the artist as an album is more of an official project. The label will pay for promotion and will give more mainstream promotion. Along with that, when it comes to award season, albums are more likely to be nominated for awards because they are deemed as official projects.
When you say mixtape, this is known to be an album that is a compilation of the different songs that people may like. There are even times when the mixtape will not have songs that are made by the same artist.
There are instances when there are different songs that will be placed there and there is a big chance that the songs will not tell a story. It is different from an album that is most often created by the artist.
There are times when there are also compilations but usually, the songs that will be placed in one album will tell a story. The more cohesive the arrangement of the album is, the better the album may sell.
