Janta curfew was one of the measures adopted by the Indian government when the country started recording coronavirus cases. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on March 20, urged every citizen of the country to observe a Janta curfew. Modi described Janta curfew as a self-imposed lockdown aimed at preparing every citizen for the fight against the novel coronavirus in the country.
The Janta curfew, as observed in India on March 22, lasted for 14 hours. Modi urged every citizen to stay off public places and other places where the disease can easily be contracted. Modi said the curfew would show the people's resolve as they prepare for the fight against the pandemic.
He further urged all the people of the country to inform their relatives about why they need to observe the curfew. Few days after Janta curfew, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a national lockdown that lasted for 21 days.
Janta Curfew is between the hours of 7 am and 9 pm. It is apart of India's social distancing regulation to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the country. The curfew was started by the Prime Minister on March 22. During these hours, businesses were shut down, and many transportation services were suspended.
This was part of the lockdown, which required citizens to stay in their home, only leaving for essential purposes. These purposes include going to the grocery store or to receive medical attention. It appears that the Prime Minister taking options like the Janta Curfew has worked, for the numbers in India have decreased.
