Due to the compression of JPG files, they are smaller. Their small size is while JPG files are best for uploading files online because they can be downloaded at a much faster rate then BMP files can. However, BMP files will result in a higher quality.
If you are not familiar with the two, bitmap, also known as .bmp and jpeg, also known as .jpg are two image formats that can be used. If you would look at the file type of your images, you may notice that most of them are in jpeg format. This type of format will be able to compress the various parts of the images so that it can be smaller.
The bitmap will not compress the parts of the images so you can expect that if you are going to save the images in .bmp format, they will be very big. Still, this may be needed if you are taking some professional photos that should always look clear. You may only see the difference with the images that you will save in these different formats if you place them side by side.
