AC means Alternating Current, while DC means Direct Current. When you say alternating current, this means that you can change your direction periodically. When you say Direct Current, this means that the flow of energy is going towards one direction only.

This is a constant voltage circuit. There are some applications right now that will use alternating currents because they would need something that would change and reverse the direction of the energy from time to time.

AC will make it more possible to send high voltages over a longer distance, which is why some people are using this moreover DC, especially with the available applications now.
