What is the difference between Enquiry and Inquiry?

There are some people who may not be sure about the differences between inquiring and enquire. When you say enquire, this means that you are going to ask something in an informal manner.

For example, when you are just asking about something that is very random, this means that you are just asking out in general. When you say inquire, this means that you are making a formal investigation.

For example, when the police are asking for details, this means that they are making some inquiries, especially when they would like to gain some information about a certain case.

Inquiry means procuring answers to questions of a curious nature or training timings or fare, or it could be arrival or departures of flights from this counter. You can enquire and ask the person behind the counter anything you need to know. The inquiry is a search for information and understanding.

The word inquiry is also a search for information, but it is also put forth as a piece of formal information. Figuring out answers to an inquiry can be like searching for parts of a puzzle.

The main difference between the two is that the word inquiry is preferred in British English, while in America, we say the word inquiry. These two words may be used interchangeably.
