The main factor that differentiates the Nikon Coolpix S8100 from the S9100 is its zoom capabilities. While the S8100 has a 10X zoom factor that is manageable and respectable, the S9100 comes with an 18X zoom factor. All this is achieved optically, and there is no loss of image detail in the process. You can get closer shots with the S9100 than with S8100.
Another lacking feature in Coolpix S8100 is the shutter priority. This feature is in the S9100, and it allows users to pick for how long the shutter would remain open, and the camera decides how large to open the aperture so as to let a sufficient amount of light in.
The main use of shutter priority is for capturing fast-moving objects while avoiding blurring. One can also choose a slow shutter speed if you need to achieve blurry effects. The Coolpix S8100 automatically sets the shutter speed, and the user cannot preset it.
