Athlon is known as the present flagship of AMD for desktop processors, which extends from the single-core models of the older age to the multi-core processors of the newer age. When it comes to the Phenom, it is a newer line of processors made by AMD, which are basically multi-core.

One major factor that makes the difference between the older Athlon and the newer Phenom is the presence of an additional L3 cache in the Phenom processors. This is considered to be larger than both the usual L1 and L2 caches in Athlons, and it enables better performance of the processor.

Phenom also enables an improvement in performance due to its main memory. While Athlons utilize just 800 MHz DDR2 modules, Phenom supports 1066 MHz DDR2 modules, and it won’t throttle down. In addition, Phenom makes use of Dual Dynamic Power Management, while Athlons don’t. And Phenom is well known to consume more power than Athlons.

AMD Athlon and Phenom are two types of desktop processors. Between the two, AMD Athlon is the flagship processor, and it is older than Phenom. When it comes to Phenom, it is much newer.

Another difference between the two is the type of cache that is in it. The Phenom processor has an L3 cache, while Athlon has an L1 and L2 cache in it. Comparing these three caches, L3 is more advanced, and it performs better than L1 and L2. Along with the caches, the two processors differ in the modules they support. Athlon supports up to 800MHz modules, while phenoms support up to 1066MHz.

AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices. If you would check some of the processors that are available, this is one of the first ones that you will see. Athlon is known to be one of the microprocessors that have been created by AMD. The AMD Athlon is considered to be the more budget-friendly version.

If you want something that is good but will not cost a lot of money, this is probably the best option that is available for you. For the Phenom, it is a bit different. The Phenom can definitely offer better performance as compared to the Athlon. The Phenom is also the choice of people who would like to play different games.

The Athlon represents the present flagship of AMD for desktop processors, varying from the earlier single-core models to the current multicore processors. The phenom refers to a newer version of processors made from AMD, which are multicore essentially. One huge factor that distinguishes the AMD phenom and Athlon is that the phenom processor has an L3 cache present in it.

The L3 cache is seen to be an advanced product to the L1 and L2 cache, and it produces better performance. Phenoms also perform better when making reference to the main memory. Phenoms present a clock that runs separately at a fixed rate to keep the memory running at very high speed, no matter the rate of the processor. Athlon supports only DDR2 modules of 800 MHz, and it throttles any modules above this capacity down to 800 MHz. Without throttling down, phenoms can still make use of DDR2 modules of 1066 MHz.
