In Sanskrit, Buddha or Buddh simply means “wise.” This is described by a phenomenon whereby someone is able to see reality as it is, arising from the fact that he has been able to control his mental activities. This is further explained by a means whereby Sattv Gunh dominates the Manas, the Maya or misinterpreted view of reality drops off, there is a shining forth of the Buddhi, and then an arising of a true perspective of reality.
Thereafter, having apprehended the real nature of things, he can now give a calm and peaceful approach to matters of life, without worries, sufferings, and stress. On the other hand, Bodhisattva comprises of two words, “Bodhi” and “Sattva.” Bodhi can be described as perfect wisdom or perfect knowledge.
It is universal, immediate, and pure knowledge. Sattva describes the peaceful, calm, and steady-state of mind, in which actions, speech, and mental activities are synchronized to maintain the state of mind. Hence, Bodhisattva refers to one that pursues both Bodhi and Sattva.
