The full meaning of HDMI is the High Definition Multimedia Interface. The HDMI cable conveys data digitally between devices while the AV is an analog system that uses the individual cables to convey data from one device to another; this makes the HDMI cable superior to the AV cable.

You need multiple cables to convey data in AV cable, which means you cannot send multiple signals with a single cable, while HDI allows you to use a single cable for multiple signals. Two cables are need for stereo sound and another for the composite video while the HDMI uses a single cable for sound and video, it allows up to 8 channels of audio signals. The AV cable is more susceptible to noise compared to HDMI cables.

HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface cable and AV cable are two types of cables used for transmitting signals from one device to another. Although their functions are very similar, there are some differences between the two. HDMI cables have some advantages over AV cables since they are digital cables, whereas AV cables are analog.

HDMI cables allow signals from digital devices to be transmitted without any reduction in their quality. This is why HDMI cables are used mostly for transmitting digital signals of High Definition videos. On the other hand, when AV cables are used, it usually causes quality degradation of the data being sent.

Another advantage of HDMI cables over AV cables is that it can be used to carry multiple signals even with a single cable. In contrast, AV cables do not support this as you will need different cables which will be used to transmit different signals.
