Dinner and supper are used synonymously when referring to evening meal
Supper originated from a French word Soper which means evening meal; it is therefore simply defined as any meal that is eaten in the evening rather than noon, it is mainly consumed after dinner before going to bed, supper is also a meal that is light or an informal one.
Dinner originated from an old French word disner, meaning take the first of the day is the meal of the day taken around midday or evening. Dinner takes place in a formal. Dinner is always a big meal with many different dishes. Lastly, dinner doesn’t refer to a specific time, yet it is the main meal of the day

A lot of people usually think that dinner and supper are the same. There are some people who think that dinner is considered to be something that is more formal. When people ask you to go to dinner, this might mean that you are going to dress up more. When you say supper, this means that you are going to eat something light.
For example, you would be eating a snack late in the evening. There are some people who think that dinner should only refer to the meals that are eaten in the evening but there are also times when this can be taken at any time of the day.
