With the rate at which asteroids exist, they are classified into three major types. Most of these asteroids are classified based on what they are made of. The three types of asteroids are Type C (chondrite), Type S (stony) and Type M (metallic). Type C asteroids are asteroids that are made up of clay and silicate rocks.
They are the most common set of asteroids, and they look very dark in terms of color. These types of asteroids are also known as Dark C, and they are mostly found very close to the sun. Type S asteroids are asteroids that are made up of metallic substances like nickel and iron, and they have some silicate minerals in their compositions.
Type S asteroids are also known as Bright S asteroids. They are mostly found very close to planet Mars. Type M asteroids are asteroids that are basically made of metallic iron, and they differ from the rest because they are very far away from the sun.
