FX, which stands for foreign exchange service, is a telecommunications network service in which a telephone in a given exchange is connected. FXO and FXS are the names of ports used by analog phone lines or phones. FXO is the plug on the phone, while FXS is the plug on the wall.
While an FXO devise connection to an office, the FS links to a station. One difference between the two is that FXS provides dial tone, while FXO requests dial tone. Another distinction that can be seen between the two is that FXS offers a dial battery, loop current, and ringing voltage.
FXO obtains ringing voltage. The FXS provides about 50 volts DC power to the line. In an urgent situation, FXO devices use the FXS line voltage for power, to remain workable in the case of power failure.
