The key difference between SMS and BBM is the phones they use. SMS is a fundamental feature on all cellphones; thus, any digital phone can send and receive SMS; however, BBM is a messaging service chiefly for Blackberry phones. Even though Blackberry is very popular, there are specific restrictions on them. If you are texting on Blackberry to someone who does not have one, the text will not go through.
BBM and SMS is a messaging service strictly to the telco, which is accountable for routing it to the recipient. BBM is also more robust compared to SMS. You may have a group conversation in BBM, where there are more than two people who are permitted to participate. You may also send pictures and audio snippets in a BBM, which is something that is not possible in SMS. BBM also allows you to send smileys and emojis in your messages.
