Aquaculture and Mariculture are two types of practices relating to the cultivation of aquatic produce. Both might look similar, but there are some differences between them. Aquaculture simply refers to the cultivation of aquatic produce which can be aquatic plants, aquatic animals, and other aquatic animals. Aquaculture is more concerned with the cultivation of aquatic produce in freshwater.
On the other hand, mariculture is usually classified as a branch of aquaculture that is concerned with the cultivation of aquatic products in seawater. All aquatic products that exist in the marine environment are controlled on mariculture.
History has it that aquaculture was first practiced in China as far back as 2500 BC, and that is why it is usually regarded as the first to be practiced out of the two. Mariculture was first practiced in Japan in the 19th century. Fishes like tilapia, salmon, catfish, milkfish, crappie, etc. Fishes like prawn, snapper, grouper, are usually produced under mariculture.
