The smooth endoplasmic reticulum’s main function is to store the different lipids and proteins that are available. The rough endoplasmic reticulum will be able to store proteins.

Another difference between the two is that the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is not bound by ribosomes, while the rough endoplasmic reticulum is bound by ribosomes, which means that you can see ribosomes on its surface.

There are also some differences in the way that they look. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum has the tendency to look like tubes, while the rough endoplasmic reticulum will sometimes look like sacs that have been inverted.
