The waxing moon is the lunar phase. It begins when the moon is past it's darkest, and it continues until the moon is brightest. When the moon is waxing, a silver moon can be seen at night, as it appears to be glowing. The waning moon is the lunar period beginning where the moon is in the lunar phase, beginning when the moon is slightly past it's fullest and brightest. It persists until the moon starts to appear far away, and it can hardly be seen anymore. When the moon is waning, it looks like it is disappearing at night. When the moon is waxing, it looks similar to a capital D. When the moon is in its waning phase, it seems like a capital C. You can also remember the difference by saying that waning means diminished.
