When it comes to the terms "hi" and "hello," most people just use whichever one comes to their mouths, but care less about what the difference between them might be, or the proper way they should be used. The two words actually several things in common. The part of speech to which "hi" belongs to is a noun, and also interjection; the same thing is applicable to "hello."

When both hi and hello are used in noun form, the two actually means "greetings." You can use either of the two words to call someone's attention. You can also use either of the two words to answer a call, though "hello" is used the most, which is proper.

Now, here lies the major difference between them; hello should be used in a formal setting, while hi can be used in an informal manner. And that is the reason why it is mostly expected to use hello while you pick a call. You can only use hi for a friend or family member. But for a stranger, official personnel, and others, you should use hello.

Hi and hello are words that are used for greeting or exclamations. Hi and Hello, are used for beginning a conversion most times.

They are a lot of differences between them, which include the way they are pronounced; hello is pronounced /həˈloʊ/ and hi is pronounced /haɪ/. Hello is used to greet somebody, attract someone's attention, and also used to pick phone calls.

Examples of sentences using the word ‘Hello’ include

1. Hello? Please, what happened here?
2. Hello, why did you do that?
3. Hello? please, who is this?

Hi is used for greeting, and it is mostly followed by short, vague conversation. Hi is informal, and you use it mostly with people that you are familiar with like friends and family. Most times, it is advisable not to say hi on your first meetings.

Hi and Hello are two types of greetings when you see someone or starting a conversation with someone. Though they can both be used for greetings, the difference between them is in regards to how they are used.

Hello is a more formal type of greeting. It is best to use this greeting when first meeting someone or when you are answering the phone and do not know the person who is calling.

Hi is the greeting that can be used in casual settings, such as when you are greeting a family member or friend. It is used in more informal settings.

The words hi or hello are greetings or exclamation that you say when you first see someone. The critical difference between the two is the formality of hello compared to the casual hi. Hello is often used as a greeting when you first meet somebody.

It is also the best way to answer the telephone, with an excellent strong hello. Hi is a popular, casual greeting. You could say, "Hi, how are you doing," or you could say, "Hi, what's up?" Hi is informal, and it is to be used when you are greeting someone that you already know.
