A partition is a major division of a hard disk drive or solid-state drive. Each partition can vary in size, and it typically serves a different purpose. This separation is where MBR and GPT come in. MBR, or The Master Boot Record is a little piece of preserved space at the beginning of the drive that contains information about how the partitions are coordinated. The MBR also has code to launch the operating system. GPT is an abbreviation for GUID Partition Table. Unlike MBR patrician table, GPT stores the data about how all the partitions are organized and boot the OS throughout the drive. It serves as a back-up because if one patrician is erased or corrupted, it is still possible to boot and recoup some of the information.
Foremost, understand that the full meaning of MBR is Master Boot Record, whereas GPT means GUID Partition Table. The two were developed by Intel as a means of loading the operating systems for their computers. However, MBR was the first to be released, before GPT was later released due to some limitations of MBR. This major limitation is the capacity of the MBR that could only allow up to two terabytes partition sizes, whereas GPT has been raised to accommodate up to about zettabytes. This shows that the GPT’s limit is about four billion times higher than the MBR’s limit. However, MBR is still very much in use to date. This is actually because not all computers can use or support GPT; meanwhile, MBR can be compatible with relatively all operating systems. It is safer when you use MBR with thumb drives or portable hard drives.

One difference between the two is the number of partitions that you can find on each disk. You can say that GPT will require more disk space. This means that if you have anything that is lower than 2 TB, then you will not be able to use it. GPT will make sure that there are multiple copies of the data that are needed across the disk which also explains why it would need more storage space as compared to MBR. For MBR, remember to partition the disk drive first before you start using it.
