Most households, particularly those in rural areas, have dumped, while urban communities go to a common dump. The government does not control dumps, and they are deficient in processing control. There is also no one monitoring them, and contamination in these areas is often high. Dumps are also notorious for harboring odors that are dangerous for people to be near.

Dumps are considered illegal and have since been superseded by landfills. Communal dumps have shifted towards becoming landfills that are controlled by the government. Landfills are confined to a small area, and layers of soil cover it. It must have a liner at the bottom of the pit to stop the leachate or the liquid from solid waste to seep through and contaminate the water supply. Landfills conduct groundwater testing and are covered with soil every day.

Dumps are a place where garbage or waste is stored. The word dump refers to an excavated piece of land, more like a disposal site, where waste or refuse is left. Dumps are mostly found in rural areas. It is common to see every house having its dump in rural areas. Although some urban places also use dumps, they are not common. In some countries, dumps are considered illegal because they are always left uncovered. They are not regulated by the government because they pose serious environmental and health problems to the general public. For instance, the odors from open dumps are harmful to man. A landfill, on the other hand, is a disposal site where refuse and waste are buried under the layers of earth. A landfill is sealed with a liner to prevent the waste from contaminating the water supply. Although landfills can also release odors like dumps, this will be after some time.

A dump is known to be a piece of land that is normally used for storing different waste materials. Take note that a dump will not have a liner, which means that all of the wastes that will be placed there will be connected to the land eventually. It is more ideal for biodegradable materials will be put there so that the land will make the breakdown of the waste. A landfill is a piece of land that is normally being regulated by the government. This is where the different solid wastes may be placed. In some poor countries, there are some people who usually live near landfills so that they can check out the trash and see if there are some items that can still be sold for a little bit of money.
