Carnivores are animals that consume flesh (meat for survival). Carnivores are classified into three types based on the level of meat consumption. The three types of carnivores are hypercarnivore, mesocarnivore, and hypocarnivore. Herpercarnivores are animals that eat mostly meat. In fact, their diet is made up of more than 70% of meat. Common examples are a polar bear, eagles, sharks, vultures, lions, and tigers.
Mesocarnivores are carnivore animals whose diet consists of 50 to 70% meat and balanced with non-animal food such as fruits, plants, and fungi. Examples are raccoons, red foxes, and skunks. Hypocarnivores are animals that consume less than 30% of meat as a diet. The majority of their diet is from plant materials such as fruits and fungi. Examples are black bears and kinkajou.
