Yes, social media can cause depression.
You must have heard that social media can have an effect on your mental health and emotions.

Studies have shown that there is a link to the use of social media to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, depression, emotional instability, loneliness, and feeling of isolation, inattention, and hyperactivity.

If mental health is not properly managed, the use of social media can cause serious mental issues for a person. The rate of social media influenced mental health issues is high in adolescents, teenagers, and women.

Social media platforms also act as a catalyst for destructive behaviors like cyberbullying, comparing, and approval-seeking. All of these can cause depression.

It depends on the age group or demographic. A study that focused on teenagers and social media demonstrates that teenage girls might be susceptible to becoming depressed due to social media because of body image issues.

The research revealed that the more time the adolescent girls spent on social media, the more depressed they became. However, a certain amount of time spent on social media can alleviate depression.

Some people struggling with mental health issues find it can be helpful and reassuring to be able to go on Facebook and connect with their online pals. These connections could make all the difference when it comes to finding social acceptance.
