The movie is estimated to be theatrically released in June 2020. The original Top Gun was released to theaters in May 1986. Maverick will be released in United Kingdom cinemas three days before it's release in the United States.
The date of the film's release was pushed back one year from the original release date of July 19th, 2019. It was stated that the reason was that extra time was necessary to develop exquisitely choreographed aerial stunts and sequences.
It was verified that a sequel would be made in 2015. Pushing the release back a whole year allowed the makers of the film to take their time and make certain that the fighter pilot material was shot appropriately, and information was correct and relevant.
