Handke won the Nobel Prize in literature in October 2019. The judges in The Swedish Academy celebrated Handke for his overall production in different genres, most notably, contemporary fiction. They said that Handke had consistently produced quality work since 1966 when he wrote, "The Hornets." His most cherished writing is the novel, "A Sorrow Beyond Dreams," which chronicles the events that led to his mother's suicide.
Even some of Handke’s most volatile critics have praised Handke, saying his poetic gifts are considerable. The decision to award Handke, the Nobel Prize, sparked much controversy because of his defense of the Serbs. Handke, who is no stranger to controversy, has always fought back against his critics. It seems that his politics overshadowed his valuable and hard-earned win.
