Peter Handke was born in December 1942 in Griffen, Austria. His father, Erich Scheunemann, was a bank clerk and German soldier whom Handke did not become acquainted with until he was an adult. His mother was Maria, a Carinthian Slovene. She married Bruno Handke, a tram conductor and Wehrmacht soldier from Berlin, before Handke’s birth.
The family resided in the Soviet-occupied Pankow district of Berlin from the time Peter was two up until he was six. Peter's half-sister, Monika, was born when he was five years of age. The family subsequently moved to his mother's hometown of Griffen. Handke’s stepfather was an abusive alcoholic, and it became so unbearable that he had to be sent away to a catholic boarding school called Tanzenberg Castle in Sankt Veit a der Glan.
