One of the things that you will notice about edge-lit and backlit is the thickness of the television where the lights may be placed. Edge-lit television and other items may be thinner as compared to the items that are backlit. Backlit television screens and other gadgets will usually have a brighter appearance, and you will also appreciate the different images that you will see on-screen more.
The edge-lit items are considered to be prettier, especially because they look amazing when you place them in rooms, but they may not offer the same brightness that backlit items can provide. Another difference is where the lights are positions. Edge-lit comes with lights that are only placed on the edges of the items, but backlit items will have the light directly behind the screen.
The main benefit of having an edge-lit display is reduced thickness. The diffuser is very thin compared to having the actual light sources behind the display. Most of the very thin shows are edge-lit rather than backlit and transfer most of the electronic parts to a more significant base or stand. The downside to an edge-lit display is the non- uniform spread of the lighting. Backlit displays may accomplish a more even range of light.
The use of LED's makes it possible to manage the light intensity of different areas where necessary by turning off the LED's behind that area. The backlit displays have the light sources spread out across the entire display, while the edge-lit only has the light on the edges.
