Diwali is a five-day festival. The purpose of it is to remember when Rama Chandra returned home after a 14 year battle with various demons. Returning home, Rama was celebrated for defeating the king of demons, which was Ravana. The festival is called Diwali because it means light over darkness.
This can translate to many other meanings, including good over evil. Diwali also celebrates when Lakshmi went around the world to find a house that was clean and bright. This is why, during the festival, people will clean their homes and illuminate buildings, temples, churches, and businesses with bright lights.
Diwali is considered to be one of the most important holidays that is being celebrated in India. The reasons for celebrating Diwali may differ depending on the part of India, where it is being celebrated. For example, in Northern India, they celebrate Diwali to commemorate the return of King Rama after defeating the Devil Ravana by using clay lamps.
When you go to Southern India, they celebrate the day when Lord Krishna became victorious over the demon Narakasura. The reasons for people may be different, but the fact remains that the reason why this is being celebrated is to show that light will always be stronger than darkness. Goodness will triumph over evil even if it takes a long time.

Diwali is celebrated to remember the day when Rama-Chandra returned to his people after spending about 14 years in a foreign land. During this period, Rama was able to fight with a demon king named Ravana, together with his demons. In the end, Rama Chandra defeated Ravana. It should be noted that there are different versions of stories behind this. However, these differences do not, in any way, reduce the meaning of Diwali as the victory of light over darkness.
Those stories actually have the same spiritual meaning and significance. Diwali celebration also marks the period when Lakshmi traveled the earth and found herself in a house that is clean, colorful, and bright. Another story says Diwali marks the period when a powerful king by the name Asura Naraka was captured. Thousands of inhabitants of Assam were imprisoned during his reign, but his defeat was seen as the victory of light over darkness.
