It was in the year 1898 when the United States of America was able to acquire Puerto Rico after the Spanish American War. The country is a part of the conditions according to the Treaty of Paris. Technically, it is supposed to be part of the US but some say that it is very complicated. Even though they are considered to be a US territory, this country is not considered a state so it does not vote in congress.
They cannot vote for the US president but they can vote in party primaries. The citizens of Puerto Rico can travel to the US freely and vice versa. Some Puerto Ricans have stated that they would rather become a state than become a territory that is not incorporated without any government.
