SKU is the term used for Stock Keeping Units. This is the inventory code that is needed by a particular company for a certain branch. For example, even if there are two branches of the same brand, the SKU codes will be different for each brand. UPC stands for Universal Product Codes. This refers to the codes that are used by different products.

No matter where they are placed, the codes will still remain to be the same. This will allow them to be tracked easily from one store to another. SKU is the acronym for Stock Keeping Unit, and UPC is the acronym for Universal Product Code. Although these two terms refer to codes assign to products, they do not mean the same thing. UPC is a bar code that is used to describe a product. UPC is made up of about 12 digit numbers, and it does not contain characters or letters. UPC is the same on a particular store irrespective of where it is sold.

SKU numbers are considered to be unique. They are available to different individual retailers. The UPC barcodes are universally used for products. For example, one product will have a UPC barcode. This barcode will refer to the product no matter where it is being sold. It can be sold in different supermarkets and the barcode will still remain to be the same.

The SKU is known to be alphanumeric while the barcode is only numeric. The SKU is usually assigned to a product to make it easier to keep track of the product’s price for that store. This explains why it may change from one store to another because stores can sell products at different prices as long as they are within the recommended SRP.
