RS232 and RS485 are known to be serial interfaces that are still being used right now. They are still being used for the different equipment that people use right now. The RS232 is used more for peripheral connections. The RS485 is being used more for devices that would require longer communication distance.

For example, if the distance would require several kilometers, this means that the RS485 is the better option to use to make sure that data will be transferred well. Just take note that the highest data transmission rate for the RS485 is 10Mbps. One main difference between the two is RS232 is full-duplex while the RS485 is half-duplex.

RS-232 and RS-485 are some of the oldest known serial interfaces. RS-232 was established around 1962. It worked by connecting data terminal equipment (DTE) to data communications equipment (DCE). It is commonly used because it is readily available. RS-232 is the most popular as it was one of the first serial interfaces to be created. However, RS-232 is limited in the distance as its cable length is usually 50ft or even less.

RS-232 also lacks multi-drop; a user is unable to connect more than one RS-232 protocol device per port. RS-485 has a much longer distance for communication, and it also has multi-drop. It works with multiple commanding devices and multiple listening devices. It generally has 2 to 4 wire system (based on the manufacturers). I hope you find this information helpful.

RS232 and RS485 are known to be the oldest serial numbers that you can find right now. They are used in many applications but they have some differences that can make people choose one over the other. RS232 is more ideal when you are working on things that would only need short speeds. This would only require one transmitter and one receiver every time.

RS232 would use single-ended cabling while RS485 would need to use differential cabling. The maximum cable length of RS242 is only 50 feet while RS485 can be extended up to 4000 feet. You definitely know which one you need based on the distance that these two can offer.

RS-232 is known to be one of the oldest serial interfaces right now. This was started in the year 1962. This is meant to connect data terminal equipment easily. This is still considered to be the best when it comes to short-distance speeds. This does not require a lot of money, and it is very easy to use.

The RS-485 is made with higher speeds because it is newer, and this is recommended for longer ranges. Different parts are required to make sure that the interface will work properly. The line configuration for the RS-232 is single-ended while it is differential for the RS-485. The differences will allow you to make the right choice.
