It was in the year 1905 when Raksha Bandhan started. This is said to have stemmed from a religious story wherein Raksha Bandhan was followed by the Lord of Death that they call Yama. Raksha was also followed by the Yamuna. The Yamuna tied a Rakhi to Yama and in return, Yama gave her immortality which explains why the river is still being considered as sacred right now.
Today, this celebration is still a big event in India because it gives people a chance to celebrate their brotherhood, their sibling relationship with other people regardless of whether they are blood-related or not. To celebrate, the sister will place a rakhi on the wrist of her brother.
