Oatmeal is a kind of porridge, and porridge, when prepared with oat, is made from cracked but whole oats. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is obtained from grinding oats into fine flour and stripping the bran. The promotion of oats as a preferred food item for breakfast is a recent declaration. Oats are more palatable than porridge because the heating makes the oats more pleasurable.

Oatmeal and porridge are both soft food that can be easily chewed and consumed by everyone. Majority of the people are not aware that these two are different dishes. Porridge is a dish made from potatoes, rice or wheat that is boiled in water until the ingredients become mushy. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is a type of porridge that is made from oats, obviously.

All oatmeal is porridge but not all porridge is oatmeal. Porridge can be a hot cereal made by boiling a variety of vegetables, grains or legumes while oatmeal is made from boiling of oats until the texture is soft. Fruits, sugar, and milk can be good additional ingredients to oatmeal for taste. Some countries add meat to (rice) porridge for taste and to complete the meal.
